What does Mother’s Day mean to a mom like me

Do you know what it’s like to be a mother?  You begin in agony and pain. Labor is a …. well, all moms know what I mean. In the beginning, you don’t sleep for months. Waking to feedings and crying, burping and slurping all the way through the early years.  Hours turn into days, weeks turn into months, and before you know it your little one is going off to school.  Letting go tears your heart right out as you have to leave your kindergartener with strangers.  The teachers tell you not to worry as your child cries and clings to you.

You walk away in tears.

Before you realize you’re running from school sporting events to shopping for school supplies and Christmas toys.

Your children are growing up.

Then comes graduation days and dating years. You realize your baby is no longer your baby. Their hearts are being shared with someone else.

Sharing hearts Sharing hearts

Life moves so fast. In a blink of an eye your once dependent baby is getting married. You witness the love they have in such a beautiful turn of events.  They are happy and content.  You are a proud mama. You sent them off to school and they became independent.  You held their hand as they crossed the streets.  Now they are driving cars and having families.

Suddenly you are a grandma.

Little babies, cherished memories, and a twinkle in their eyes, your baby is raising a family.  The grand babies are cherished.  As a mother you had to care for every aspect of your child’s life. Food on the table, School tuition and provide a healthy foundation. You were responsible for all of their well-being. Grandmas get to love without the responsibility. Grandmas get to spoil without worrying that they will have too much.  Grandmas are angels sent by God to alleviate the burdens of parenting.

Do you know what it means to be a mother?  All of these things and so much more. It’s the little things like watching your daughter in her wedding dress announcing she’s getting married on her wedding day.  It’s listening to your son tell you his experience of watching his newborn baby girl being born.  It’s the excitement in their voices, it’s the love in their hearts, it’s knowing they are great parents.  These are the blessings of being a mom.

On this Mother’s Day and every day, we celebrate our moms, our children and we’re grateful for them being in our lives.  Happy Mothers Day to all those who read this message.
